The Perpetuation of Nothing (daily stock quotes)

2009-

This series of work reflects on the question of value and the fear of nothingness in the aftermath of The Stock Market Crisis in 2008.  Oil paint interventions on The Financial Times Newspaper business section block out the stock market quotes in repetitive lines leaving only the zeros exposed. In a culture that values the perpetual progression of amassing more while leaving very little silence in its wake, this series points to the daily practice of taking care and bringing attention to quietness while critiquing the structure of materialism that dominates society today.

A selection of this work was shown at Post Electronica, a homage to John Cage during the Fabbrica Europe Festival in Florence, 2011.  Since Cage dedicated his life to researching the practice of ‘silence’, this work is both a dedication to that research as well as a critique of the 'other' side of silence and nothingness; one that perpetuates the fear of nothingness in order to encourage mass consumption and the continuation of its own self-constructing structures.

We Live in The Times

2009

These works are oil paint interventions on advertisements which line the business section of The Financial Times newspaper.  Reflecting on the ideas described above, these particular works dissolve the ‘subject’ of the ads in order to expose the subtext which dictates how the self in contemporary society should be and act.
