Harmonic Proportions

Graphic score and sound piece

Harmonic Proportions is a graphic score and sound piece where the empty spaces between bamboo leaves become a starting point for music, proposing that emptiness is integral to life, and that Harmony lies within the interval of these relationships.

For this particular realisation of the score, the instrument is a piano, referencing the instrument most used as the basis of western classical harmony. 37 melody lines are made from each drawn line. The blue lines go forward in time.  The red lines go back in time. The chromatic scale is the pathway used for each melody line and references both the fundamental divisions of classical piano tuning as well as the root of the word 'chromatic', which is color, an element in painting and drawing.
